GPT4o Just Landed And Will Be Free For All!

The latest OpenAI ChatGPT model just got reveiled and it will be free for everyone - but more importantly: the GPT Store will be, too!

That keynote from OpenAI was cool to watch, but the most interesting point for me was kind of a footnote: GPT4o for everyone, including access to the GPT store!

This means that all the chatbots I am building will suddenly be usable for free by everyone on the planet. Initially I assumed that it will stay locked as an premium feature, so the actual amount of people who can try it is rather limited. This has changed suddenly now. That opens up a lot of potential reach and a new era of GPT marketing!

When things continue roughly as they are, there will be a lot of custom GPTs out there, competing for attention. This means external marketing is required (and now effective!) to drive people to custom GPT URLs, and since its free people might be quite motivated to try it out instantly.

This also means that a Custom GPT is now a viable tool for extremely rapid prototyping of an idea that can be shipped to potential customers:

  1. Make a GPT Agent that roughly executes on the desired use case as good as possible.
  2. If needed, supplement it with some backend APIs to feed specialized data or let it do real-world interactions
  3. share the link with the audience

Since GPT can be instructed to ask users for some required data needed for API calls (like email addresses), its now a full application platform with a UI that every user should "get" right away.

Also assuming that these models will continue to become better and better over time, the "apps" (custom GPTs) improve themselves every time, too!

Taking all this into the equation for indie hacking, the following "components" should now be the valuable building blocks of the future:

  • landing pages to promote a custom GPT (or straight up advertising)
  • OpenAPI-compatible REST APIs to feed the GPTs or execute tasks on their behalf
  • The Custom GPTs itself, which are "programmable" by non-developers, a no-code tool ultimately

This also means that there is an opportunity to sell API keys for desired functionalities, ready to be plugged in to these GPTs!

One key point is still missing, though. The Revenue-Sharing of custom GPTs is not available yet. But when this comes around, I assume the gold rush will start, and people will be looking for pre-existing capabilities (APIs) to plug into their tools immediately.

What will you build when this happens?
